Who Are We?

Bec and Mike Take Photos is a collaboration between Bec Jones and Mike Emmett. After a wedding shoot turned out to be loads of fun, Bec and Mike decided to pursue further collaborative gigs in photography. Both proficient and professional photographers in their own rights, Bec and Mike work together as peers to cover the subject thoroughly – each seeing through different eyes to make the record of the day complete.

Bec and Mike are both team members at the Yarra Valley design agency, Redfish Bluefish Creative.

Since joining forces, they have photographed for:
Weddingstoo many amazing days to count
Wineriessome of the Yarra Valley’s finest, including Giant Steps, Yarra Yering, Luke Lambert, Millers, and more.
RestaurantsThe Brandon, St Judes Cellars, Sousvide Australia at Taxi (fed square) and more.

Has been known to: Stand on a fountain, just to get the angle.

Mike Emmett

Loves: The story, the  end-to-end narrative of a day. Seeing “that moment” when the complete story makes sense.
Has been known to: Carry a ladder in the car, just in case…

What makes us tick?

Mike:

When I started taking photos, it was all about the light. I loved the light, the dark, and the in-betweens. I love how a change in light across an image can change a whole composition. Chirascuro, it’s called. I still pursue the light and dark, but these days its in the context of the story. Composition, light, subject – all help tell the story.

Taking great photographs is like listening to a story. There’s a moment when you truly hear another’s story that complete understanding passes between you. It’s during that moment in photography that a great image is waiting to be captured. I try to be present in the moment before me, to take photographs that pass on understanding and tell a story.

Bec:

I am passionate about photography as a medium to capture and express the very essence of life… simplistic and raw – as it really is. I have developed an interest in lifestyle photography… being more journalistic in style – with an emphasis on capturing the story and the imagination.

In 1996 I graduated from the International College of Professional Photography, and Professional Studies College and have completed Post Graduate studies in Graphic Design.

I have held a number of exhibitions, and also engage in commission work for various publications, local businesses and select weddings.

Golly, this was a fun one! I must apologise for pushing this fun couple so far! Although, they did seem to enjoy it! Might have gone a bit far when I introduced the burly Kiwi security guard to the photoshoot though… ! Mind you, how often do you get a Maori blessing at an aussie wedding? Po was a legend!
